Privacy Policy

Overview
Thoth is a transcription app that processes all audio and transcriptions locally on your device. We do not operate any servers and no data ever flows to us. We do not collect, store, or have access to any user data. Optionally, if you choose to use cloud AI features, transcript text may be transmitted directly from your device to the AI provider you select — never through our infrastructure.
Data Collection
We do not collect any personal data.
All data remains on your device:
- Audio recordings — stored locally on your Mac
- Transcriptions — generated and stored locally using on-device speech recognition (WhisperKit)
- Local AI models — large language models (Qwen 2.5 7B, Llama 3.2 3B) are downloaded once from HuggingFace and run entirely on your device using llama.cpp. No data is sent to any third party during inference
- WhisperKit models — speech-to-text models are downloaded from HuggingFace and cached locally in your Documents folder
- App preferences — stored locally in UserDefaults
- Subscription status — managed by Apple (Apple’s Privacy Policy)
Local AI (On-Device)
Thoth includes local AI capabilities that run entirely on your Mac with no network connection required after the initial model download.
- Transcription — powered by WhisperKit (MIT License). Audio is processed on-device; no data leaves your Mac
- Local LLM inference — powered by llama.cpp (MIT License) running models such as Qwen 2.5 7B (Apache 2.0 License) and Llama 3.2 3B (Llama 3.2 Community License)
- Model weights are downloaded once from HuggingFace and cached locally. Please note: These AI models are large files (several gigabytes). We highly recommend downloading them over an unmetered Wi-Fi connection
- All inference happens on your Apple Silicon GPU/CPU — your recordings, transcriptions, and prompts never leave your device
Built with Llama
Cloud AI (Optional, API Key Required)
Thoth’s optional cloud AI features require you to provide your own API key from a supported provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google). The app will ask for your explicit consent before sending any data to a third-party AI provider.
When you use cloud AI features, the following data is sent:
- What is sent: transcript text (or excerpts) relevant to your request (e.g. summarization, translation). No audio is ever transmitted.
- Who it is sent to: the AI provider you selected (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google) — directly from your device to theirs
- Not sent to us: we do not operate servers and have no access to your data, API keys, or the content of your AI requests
Additional details:
- Your API key is stored securely in your device’s Keychain
- AI requests go directly from your device to the AI provider using your credentials
- We never see, store, or have access to your API key or the data you send to AI providers
- When you use cloud AI features, the relevant text (e.g. transcript excerpts) is sent to your chosen provider. No audio is ever transmitted
- Regional availability: Cloud AI features may not be available in all countries due to local regulations. On-device AI features are available everywhere
- Please refer to your chosen AI provider’s privacy policy for how they handle your data:
